Dr. Laura G. Torres is a researcher, developing author, illustrator and painter. A strong believer in the power of stories, her creative work focuses on unlocking hidden worlds found in lived experiences and wildlife.
Her research specifically focuses on the cognitive science of human learning, motivation and behavior in relation to research communication for public good. As a researcher and co-author, her visual graphics and narratives have been featured in PBS Austin InSight, Houston Chronicle and used in legislative testimony around educational issues in Texas.
She is currently working on two book projects. One focuses on why modern researchers decide to go beyond their academic institutions to communicate their research for public good, and second, a children’s book about the power of nature as a guide for navigating life transitions.
Her paintings, inspired by her Texas roots, have been exhibited in local coffee shops in Washington, D.C.

Texas Legislative Testimony (2024) - invited to discuss research I co-led about the Texas teacher shortage and educator preparation pathways for the Public Higher Education Committee.
PBS Austin InSight (2025) - featured data visualization and narrative that I created from a research project on enrollment in Austin ISD public and charter schools.
Houston Chronicle (2025) - featured data visualization and narrative that I created from a research project on enrollment of students with disabilities in Texas.
